Ana Maria Gonzalez reaches out to many areas of her country for inspiration. With this decorative keepsake box, she takes motifs from the Otomi culture of central Mexico to create a rustic decoupage wood box with a detachable lid. Otomi embroidery is prized all over the world.

The petite keepsake box is the creation of Felicita Espinoza of Surco, Peru, who began crafting 20 years ago with her husband and continues today with her daughter Milagros. The box is handcrafted from wood and glass. The motifs are painted on the reverse side of glass panes with a design inspired by the colonial period. The technique results in a wonderful clarity of color.

Inspired by Persia's beautiful carpets, Mohammad Hussain Baba creates a petite jewelry box for personal treasures. He works in the style of Kashmir, crafting the container of weeping willow wood. He then covers it with papier mache in an art form that originated in Persia in the 15th century and paints the intricate images by hand. They are protected with a coat of lacquer, and the box is lined with black velvet.
