Day of the Dead traditions make their way to Marina Pallares' exclusive interpretation of Mexico's lotería, as card number 28. It is a unique version of the classic bingo game featuring traditional images. The loteria made its appearance in the second half of the 18th century, and it is still a favorite at schools, fairs, carnivals and festivals. "I grew up in Jalisco, known for the production of tequila from agave plants, and as a child I used to play lotería all the time. These two facts inspired me to create the 'Tequila Lotto' series," confides Pallares, who credits the influence of Leopoldo Méndez and José Guadalupe Posada in her work. She masters aquafortis and aquatint etching techniques to create this eloquent composition.

The feathered serpent of Mesoamerican legend has a human face and a bird perches on his head. To the Maya, he was Kukulkan while the Aztecs called him Quetzalcoatl and in Yucatán he was known as Tepeu Kukumaz. Morneo depicts his own interpretation of the pre-Hispanic deity in bright psychedelic colors. The Mexican artisan works in papier-maché, crafting and painting the signature mask by hand.

Included are famous characters such as Balám the jaguar, as well as Mayan gods Quetzalcoátl, Kukulkan, and Chaac. Famous Mayan structures are also depicted, such as the Chac Mool statue, believed to link the mortal and immortal worlds, and the grand pyramid known as El Castillo of Chichen Itza, one of the largest Mayan pyramids ever discovered. Artisans in San Martín Tilcajete in the state of Oaxaca apply their vast wood carving knowledge to various subjects, including skulls. Jesus and Roxana Hernandez of San Martín present a hand-carved copal wood skull figurine in a rich terracotta hue. The green, blue, and yellow circles containing geometric patterns on the skull's top and sides are meticulously painted by hand. Green borders surround the black eye sockets and nasal cavities while a red line separates the top row of immaculately white teeth from the bottom row.
