Sinuous and beautiful, the Nazca monkey appears in warm shades of brown. The tightly coiled tail glows; to pre-Hispanic man, the spiral was a magical symbol. Working in luxurious alpaca wool, Teofilo Choquecahua faithfully recreates the famous Peruvian geoglyph. The mysterious figures of the Nazca Plain, located about 200 miles south of Lima, can be seen in their entirety only from the air.

The Nazca petroglyphs remain an irresolvable mystery, inspiring Teofilo Choquecahua to design this stunning tapestry with the famed llama. Now regarded Patrimony of Humanity, the Nazca lines as they are also known, are thought to have been some form of calendar for this pre-Inca civilization. Choquecahua weaves the brown and yellow tapestry on a traditional pedal loom with a cotton warp in the legendary Ayacucho style.

Designed and crafted by Deborcio Choquecahua of Peru, this beautiful alpaca blend tapestry is the artisan's interpretation of the Nazca monkey. The early inhabitants of the Nazca region of southern Peru would use the shape of the monkey's spiral tail to represent the constellation we call Ursa Major. The Nazca monkey's hands are specifically placed to mark the relationship of additional stars to the Ursa Major constellation during the rainy season. The artisan uses colors that transition in an ombre effect from gold to brown for the hummingbird, and uses a similar transition of color in the background from deep brown to near white, giving the illusion that the hummingbird is aglow.

Zosimo Laura evokes the bold geometry of the Nazca Plain, intricately portrayed in hand-loomed wool. Mirror images in ochre and orange find a home on velvet black. The mysterious lines of Nazca depict abstract shapes, animal and bird figures. Probably the best-known geoglyphs in the world, they can be seen in their entirety only from the air.
