An educational program was established for them and artist Diego Rivera's daughter, Guadalupe Rivera Marin, encouraged crafting these popular rag dolls as a way to generate income in the 1980s. Artisan women took the idea home to their Mazahua and Otomi towns and the dolls became popular throughout Mexico and abroad.

A renowned author, journalist and political cartoonist (1852-1913), he created Catrina, (meaning "dapper") and her mate, Catrin, as caricature symbols of Mexico's politicians, implying that after all, they too die. Since then, Catrina has become an essential element of Day of the Dead celebrations but without the political underpinnings. She represents Mexico's comedic attitude towards death.

A beautiful Catrina.

This is a very nice Catrina. What impressed me the most is that given my past experience with this type of ceramics, I was hesitant to order it just because I was afraid it may not make it on the shipping. Well, I had to use my old dissection skills to unwrap it. The packaging was superbly done. Now to the piece, it is as beautiful as it shows in the picture. It is elegant and genuinely "coqueta."
