Carolina Cabrera in Guatemala was inspired by the beauty and freedom of birds to create this wonderful diptych. The two colored pencil drawings depict a macaw and a bluebird, rendered in magnificent detail on black paper. The artist presents the original artworks in a simple black frame.

A single marguerite daisy flaunts petals of pristine purity in this lovely flower study. To the left, abstract foliage suggest stained glass on a sunny afternoon while red and yellow convey summer's warmth. Sylvia Fournier creates an enchanted vision of Costa Rica with this mixed media painting. She calls her technique "photo art," digitally printing one of her original photographs on canvas, then painting over parts of it with acrylics, pastels, chalk and marking pens. The result is beautiful.

Memories from ancestors offer a glimpse of the Mayan grandeur. Oil and liquid glass allow Guatemalan artist Carolina Cabrera to capture the country's pride in the ancient Maya world, paying homage to her heritage. The artist adds a symbolic message through the diverse elements composing this expressionist painting. The man at the center represents Guatemala's people, whereas the fuming candles appear to create a symphony of colors that depict the Maya's cultural richness.

The piece, titled Ritual Maya in Spanish, arrives signed and stretched.

"When I was a child my parents gave me a book with the story of Cinderella and it really struck me that all of her accessories were reversed to their original form by midnight except for the glass slippers. This intrigued me and stayed with me because the shoes represented access to an assumed freedom provided by the so-called Prince Charming," says Costa Rican artist Magda Cordoba. She works with watercolor and ink on paper to create a whole series around this theme capturing different kinds of shoes with a multicolored palette, floral motifs and a collage technique where each shoe is individually cut and then placed on the paper. The Expressionist-style painting comes with a cardboard mat and a foamboard base.
