Elegantly clad in a red and gold gown, La Catrina lifts the edge of her lacy, broad-brimmed hat. Maria Lozano in Mexico crafts the wonderful skeletal figurine from papier mache, painting it carefully by hand. Lozano designs the figurine after the original "La Calavera Catrina", a zinc etching created by the artist José Guadalupe Posada in Mexico around 1910. Posada created the character, a female skeleton with an elegant hat, as a satirical portrait of Mexican natives who aspired to European style and denied their own heritage. The catrina has since become an emblem of Mexico's Day of the Dead celebration and a popular folk art subject.

Angel Cerón masterfully replicates the legendary chac mool sculpture, found in front of the Templo Mayor in Mexico City. Cerón sculpts the ceramic piece by hand depicting a man with elaborate headdress and ornamentation holding a bowl over his belly. It is believed to be designed to hold ritual offerings, perhaps human hearts. The name, chac mool, means "red jaguar" and was intended to refer to those sculptures found in the Yucatan peninsula, but now it refers to similar sculptures from different pre-Hispanic communities, including Toltec. It serves as evidence of the relationship between all these ancient cultures before the Spanish conquest.

Fun, whimsicle kitty! Excellent work.

Bought this sweet little kitty for my friend. It reminded me of a stray cat that adopted her. Miss Dilly the cat is now coming into her house and has become quite affectionate -- Maybe because of this little Spirit Kitty (smile)? I love the work of Zeny and Reyna.
