According to legend, the princess Ixmucané was granted the ability to solve people's problems by the Sun God. Over time, people began to make tiny dolls in remembrance of Ixmucané. They would tell the dolls their problems in the hopes that Ixmucané would solve them. The custom became very popular, and continues to this day. Oscar Rodolfo Mendoza celebrates the art of the ancient Maya with the original design of this ceramic bowl. Decorated with a falcon's head on the lid and human glyphs on the body, the bowl is crafted by hand with the same ceramic techniques developed by the Maya Pibil people. Little is known about them, other than that the Pibil were a warrior and migrant community that came to El Salvador from Mexico. This bowl is treated to achieve an antiqued look, featuring red and orange hues obtained from achiote seeds.

The Pipil or Nahua was an indigenous community that migrated from Mexico to El Salvador around 1000 AD and coexisted in some regions with the Mayas. Little is known about the influence they had on each other's cultures, but some ceramic vessels and pitchers with polychrome motifs painted over red or white backgrounds have been found. Oscar Rodolfo Mendoza gets inspiration from these ancient pottery techniques to handcraft a ceramic decorative jar whose lid is crowned with a falcon's head and whose body features glyphs painted with acrylic paints and natural dyes obtained from achiote seeds.

I use to live in Guatemala and use to enjoy going to all the craft shows. I have a house full of treasures from Guatemala. Use to go to the old capital by bus with al the chickens. Scary bus ride from Tuguesagalpa. I love the work that all of your womans group does! Thank you!
