Target-like circles on the face identify this ethereal winged creature as a butterfly, while some scholars believe it represents a bat or a hawk. Gliding on checkerboard wings, the mask represents a nature spirit among the Bwa tribe of Burkina Faso. Salihu Ibrahim carves the elegant image from African sese wood.

We purchased all seven butterfly masks offered by Salihu Ibrahim. This one is my favorite. We thought maybe the checked pattern would be too bold and overwhelm the other masks in our display, but the carving and the subtle muted colors in the mask make it just right! We were surprised that there is a touch of indigo along with the predominant black and taupe, but decided that it just adds to the interest. The wood is light and easily hung. Perfect!
