Part of the Kota tribe in far northeast Gabon near the Congo border, the Ossyeba practice ancestor worship and once used reliquaries extensively in their funeral ceremonies. The figures are intended to protect the deceased from evil spirits. Victor Addo Biney presents this elaborate reliquary mask in the Ossyeba style, hand-crafted from wood and embossed metal and painted in brown, ocher and green hues.

For years, I ve had a large African mask that I loved hanging on my wall. However, the mask was recently broken and I was crushed. I knew I wouldn t be able replace it with an identical mask and I wasn t even sure I would find another mask that I liked, let alone loved. I was WRONG!! ??

This is my 3rd mask purchased from the artist. I love the design and it?s now part of my collection. The colors red and green aren?t dark like seen in the picture. However, it?s still a nice mask.
