Decorated with diamonds of ornately embossed aluminum, an owo (snake) gives shape to an extraordinary staff. Eva Asantewa Amakye carves the piece by hand of seasoned sese wood.
Many African societies regard a person with a staff with respect and dignity. Usually associated with age, an elderly person using a staff is believed to have accumulated vast knowledge and wisdom through the years. Traditionally, the design on a staff tells the societal status and political inclination of the person using it.

The Owo itself is beautiful upon removal from the box, and you can tell each white crescent was hand placed. But the white in the crescents must be chalk or something and not sealed in, as with only one day of handling (everyone wanted to see it at Christmas) the white came out of the indents. Also I guess Sese wood must be delicate, because as it was leaning up against the wall while I was preparing to hang it it slid down the wall and fell to our wooden floor, breaking into three pieces. As this was a Christmas present I was very sad. We glued it back together, but the pieces wouldn?t line up and it?s obvious that it has been broken. :( I just saw the 60 day guarantee, so that gives me hope that I?ll be able to look at this beauty on the wall.
