Originally used for traditional costumes and only worn by royalty, Batik is now listed as a masterpiece of intangible cultural history by the UNESCO. Batik arts are deeply rooted in Indonesian culture and have been passed down through generations. The wax resist dying and multi-step processing is also dependent on the weather, with sunlight determining the final outcome of each piece of fabric. Ancient symbols and natural colorssuch as sage and rosewood combine in this wearable work of art from textile artist Desak Nyoman Parwati. The soft 100% rayon long robe features wide sleeves, two front pockets and a matching tie belt.

“Lovely robe”

The colors are soft and muted, making this robe ideal to keep things mellow. I am going on vacation in November to a tropical area and think this item of clothing will fit right in! It is very well made.

“I like so much, I bought twice!”

This dress is so comfortable and soft. Stylish and lovely to wear on special occasions with heals or casual with flats or sandles. I get compliments whenever and wherever Im wearing it. I meant to purchase a similar dress in a size smaller, due to weight loss. Bought this by mistake. Dont even care! The colors are stunning, havent faded. A favorite for sure.

“Beach/pool necessity!”

Gorgeous sarong. The fabric has a good weight and a wonderful drape. Colors are vibrant. So versatile - can be used as a scarf, wrap, skirt, dress... Pefect cover up for beach or pool and I love that each one is hand made and therefore unique. This is a high-quality sarong. I cant wait to take this on my next vacation.

Preserving Traditions

For eleven years Desak worked with a batik artisan learning all aspects of the process, from wax painting to dyeing. From her, she learned not only the art of batik and textile design but also how to care for her workers. In her workshop, Desak and the older artisans generously teach their art to the younger artisans, preserving for another generation this UNESCO cultural treasure.

Microcredit Financing

Desak Nyoman Parwati has received 3 microcredit loans with 0% interest from Kiva and Novica, the first for $2800 and the most recent for $4000. Proceeds were used to invest in the purchase of textiles and batik dyes to increase production in time for the holiday season.
