A grand parliament of owls bring the spirit of their native Guatemala to the home environment, each with its own disposition and expression. Master ceramics artisan Jose Arriola crafts this family of owls, at his workshop in Antigua Guatemala, where his family has been producing artisanal products for more than 100 years. Jose creates these owls with the ancient wood-fired terracotta process over the course of days. First, Jose forms each owl in a mold, then heats the clay in a 1300-degree kiln and applies a glazed finish before painting each owl by hand.

“A wonderful gift for my husband!”

My husbands mother was from Guatemala, and she loved hummingbirds. So when I saw these ornaments, I knew theyd be perfect for him. Each bird is decorated with a unique design, and they are all lovely and vibrant. For convenience, they come with a colorful pouch for storage (if you only want them as Christmas ornaments). But you can also hang them around the house for a pop of color and beauty.

“Marvelous!”

What a great idea to create these tiny animals molded and painted with such patience and creativity. I am an all animals lover. My next small Christmas tree will be a Noahs Ark Friends one. It will be admired and loved for sure and I hope it will inspire friends and family to purchase these tiny marvels from the very talented Jose Arriola. Congratulations for these wonderful creations!

Jose creates the most beautiful ceramic ornaments and figurines. His family has lived in Antigua for more than 100 years and he takes great pride in practicing the same ceramic techniques his ancestors used. He wishes to help this tradition continue and he teaches anyone in his community who has an interest in learning.

Microcredit Financing

Jose Arriola has received 7 microcredit loans with 0% interest from Kiva and Novica, the first for $450 and the most recent for $2550. Proceeds were used to purchase paints and materials for his ceramics to continue production.

Jose's children are all grown but but he does provide financial support for the education of one person outside of his family and he occasionally supports other children's school expenses.
