Carved and painted by hand, this mask is representative of the Ewe people of Ghana. "Every peasant farmer with a bumper harvest is given this piece at a ceremony in the chief's palace," says Ghanaian artisan Evelyn Kafui Ahianyo. "This is in appreciation of his hard work toward feeding the community. Apart from being decorative, it serves as an inspiration to other farmers. Good work is always rewarded." She names the mask Hornam, which means "Increase" in the Ewe language.
