Growing up surrounded by a family of artisans, J.S. Anderson devotes his artistic career to exploring the new possibilities offered by polymer clay. Working with Meili W., he diligently forms the clay by hand into tubes that feature colorful and imaginative designs. Cross sections are cut from these tubes and carefully applied on the body of this sculpture that depicts a mother penguin and her young. The loving duo is decorated with elaborate designs and patterns that include whale motifs along the mother's back and penguin designs on her belly. J.S. Anderson has worked for 25 years to perfect this millefiori-style technique, which has allowed him to create intricate and amazing designs on his sculptures. Each pattern on this sculpture is diligently arranged by the artisans through a painstaking process to ensure perfection.

Luxuriously gowned in an antique silver hue, a dancer personifies Yemanjá, the goddess of all the earth's waters and mother of all Candomblé orixás.

The Candomblé religion is widely observed in northeastern Brazil. The name derives from kandombele, a Congolese-Angolan word meaning "to pray." practised in South America since slaves were brought over from Africa by the Portuguese, it combines Yoruban practises with Roman Catholic imagery. The orixás, or gods, are the forces of the earth; song and dance are a form of worship, and the dance impersonates the god, inspiring myths and legends.

As an homage to the doctrine's cultural richness, Hugo Negrini crafts an image that is both stunning and ethnographically correct. He first carves the image in wood, taking as long as 50 or 60 days, depending on the degree of detail in the piece. When the statuette is ready, he makes a silicone rubber mold and casts the sculpture in resin.

He works in fragrant cedar wood to depict his subject as realistically as did the pre-Hispanic ceramists of Jaina Island more than a thousand years ago in their "Female Figure with Loom." Deftly carving intricate details with superb realism, the Guatemalan artisan dresses the woman in a necklace of pinewood beads.

Beautiful piece

Mama elephant and her baby are beautiful. I looked at several wooden sculptures, and when I saw this one, I knew it was the one. It spoke to me. It is very detailed, and the wood is very nice. I gave this to my husband for our 14th anniversary. Ivory is the traditional gift. We both love it. As the mama elephant protects her young, my husband is my protector, and I am his. This was the perfect gift.

Cute and colofrul

I have been collecting Jon Anderson pieces for three years now and when I saw this penguin - had to get it. The colors are great and the baby penguin adds to the smile I get when I look at it. I love his pieces because they depict animals I have seen on my travels and they are so unique with color.
