The skull is decorated in two styles; one side has traditional Talavera motifs in cobalt on white, while the other side has a random spatter pattern of black on natural beige.

Elegant Catrina strolls around the park under a wide-brimmed hat, parasol at hand. Artisans from the Angel Cerón Artisan Association conjure her flamboyant appearance inspired by the original work of José Guadalupe Posadas. A renowned author, journalist and political cartoonist (1852-1913), he created Catrina, (meaning "dapper") and her mate, Catrin, as caricature symbols of Mexico's politicians, implying that after all, they too die. Since then, Catrina has become an essential element of Day of the Dead celebrations but without the political underpinnings. She represents Mexico's comedic attitude towards death.

Mexico's Day of the Dead festivities are unlike any other country's, but skulls are part of the national shared imagery and are a favorite subject for artisans all year. After this hand carved copal wood skull from Jesus and Roxana Hernandez of the Mexican state of Oaxaca is covered in navy blue paint with tiny sky blue dots, it is further decorated on the tops and sides with circles containing geometric figures and curving lines. Yellow, black, green, purple, and pink tones are utilized to hand paint the fanciful designs. Around the blackened eye sockets are outlines in yellow and red; the nasal cavity is delineated in purple. Two straight rows of white teeth give the skull a sober expression.
