Sankofa, a traditional West African adinkra symbol, adorns the base of a traditional djembe drum. It depicts a bird with its head turned backwards, taking an egg off its back. The word sankofa in the Twi language of Ghana means to "reach back and take it," in other words, to return to one's roots or take what is good from the past.

Lawrence Kattah creates the patterns on tweneboah wood. The djembe originated in Benin and has been introduced into neighboring countries; it has become indispensable in reggae. The goatskin head is affixed by iron rings wrapped in cotton, and the drum features a macramé cord handle.

Adinkra symbols are visual symbols that were introduced by the Akan peoples; they usually represent proverbs or concepts. The table folds for easy storage when not in use.

The adinkra symbols on the tabletop are: Hye won hye, which translates to "that which does not burn"--a symbol of imperishability and endurance; Gye nyame, meaning "except for God"-- a symbol of God's supremacy; Wawa aba, "seed of the wawa tree" representing hardiness, toughness and perseverance; Nsoromma, "child of the heavens", a symbol of guardianship; Nyame biribi wo soro, meaning "God is in the heavens", a symbol of hope; Sankofa, meaning "return and get it", a symbol of the importance of learning from the past; Osram ne nsoromma, "the moon and the star", a symbol of love, faithfulness, and harmony; Nkonsonkonson, "chain link", a symbol of unity and human relations; and Sepow, "the knife thrust through the cheeks of the man about to be executed to prevent his invoking a curse on the king"--a symbol of justice.

Forever close to my heart

This is a very beautiful piece of jewelry! Since finding out that a majority of my DNA comes from Ghana and Nigeria I wanted to support the artist there. I also wanted a piece of a place Iâ€™ve never been to in an effort to feel connected to my roots while also remembering the meaning behind the Sankofa. I absolutely love this finely crafted piece of jewelry and i wear it close to my heart.
