Details

Unfurling her majestic wings, Wierika, the eagle is the centerpiece in this brilliant mask of vibrant colors. Higinio Hernandez Carrillo takes his inspiration from the sunsets of the sierra, and turns to the icons of his people for expression. Deer and jikurí, or peyote, appear on the burning face of Tau tayau, the sun.

The mask itself is crafted of papier maché, carefully smoothed, and coated with beeswax. The artisan then applies each tiny chaquira bead, using a needle to place each one with precision.
