The bear figurine is adorned with a tortuka or scorpion, a creature believed by the Huichol to represent protection. The Huichol are an indigenous people of central northwest Mexico with a rich culture and artisanal heritage.

The rabbit symbolizes the permanent movement of earthiness reflected in the lunar mirror. The deer is the spirit that animates the movement of our wise memory, marking the spiral path of our ancestral cultures in permanent transformation and adaptation around the peyote-maize." The artist has created the word "eARThiness" to emphasize the word "art" found inside "earth." "For me, this eARThiness is very important and meaningful."

This is a slightly more modern take on traditional Wixárika (Huichol) jaguar heads. Instead of base made from wood, the head is formed using the more ecologically-friendly cartonería, a hard papier mache, a growing and innovative craft in Mexico. Miguel Díaz is a Wixárika artist keeping symbols such as the peyote and the deer as seen on this piece. The beads are placed one-by-one attached with beeswax that Díaz prepares, and the piece can be displayed on either a wall or a table.

There are no lions native to western Mexico, but the Huichol (Wixarika) people were introduced to them through the Spanish. This is an interpretation of the animal using glass beads attached over a papier mache form. Artist Miguel Díaz hand presses each bead individually using beeswax as a kind of glue to create the intricate patterns and colours that you see here.

This wide wristband bracelet is hand-strung with tiny glass beads on silken threads by Angeles Gonzalez in Guadalajara, Mexico. The cuff-style bracelet closes with two loops and features a Huichol-style deer motif at the centre.
