Mauricio Morales crafts a small ceramic bird figurine that features exquisite hand painted detailing. "The process for making these small animals was something I learned when I was small...since then it has become a passion of mine," says the Guatemalan artisan, adding that the bird sculpture is made for, "...all of those who love birds." He starts by mixing the clay and carefully shaping the figure, and then he adds aluminium legs and feet. After the bird is fired, he sands it, mixes his own colours, and paints the figurine. The result is a charming, meticulously painted blue jay complete with crested head, bright blue plumage, and white breast.

Carved of copal wood, this delightful figurine from Mexico depicts a swordfish. Mexican duo Zeny and Reyna design this "mystery of nature" in the traditional style of alebrije handicrafts. The swordfish features a vibrant, hand-painted finish.

The alebrije tradition started with Mexico City papier mache artisan Pedro Linares (1906-1992). When he was 30, he fell into a coma due to serious illness. While he was unconscious, he dreamed he was caught between the land of the living and the dead; the place looked like a forest and was populated with creatures with body parts belonging to different animals. The beings repeatedly uttered the word alebrije. Upon recovering, Linares recreated these figures in bright colors using papier mache techniques and called them alebrijes. His work became famous and was one of the main influences of artisans in the state of Oaxaca who began crafting alebrijes of their own using traditional wood carving methods.

I have this one perched on an antique crock (on top of my Baker's Cabinet)... looking up at a blue jay painting that my son bought for me. I love how the two works of art look together. I have purchased many of Mauricio's birds for myself and to give as gifts. All are incredible works of art.
