Dapper in his dark suit and tie and carrying a briefcase, this handsome skeletal businessman is crafted by Mexico's Jorge Escamilla. The artisan works in clay and steel wire to create the ceramic statuette, modeled after the tradition of José Guadalupe Posada's "La Calavera Catrina". The original "La Calavera Catrina" was a zinc etching created by the artist José Guadalupe Posada in Mexico around 1910. Posada created the character, a female skeleton with an elegant hat, as a satirical portrait to lampoon Mexican natives who aspired to European style and denied their own heritage. The catrina has since become an emblem of Mexico's Day of the Dead celebration and a popular folk art subject.

The mariachi, a distinctive musical style, is a musical group comprised of singers dressed as the traditional charro, or elegant gentleman cowboy from Jalisco. Women mariachis, however, do not dress as escaramuzas, the feminine counterpart of the charro, but adapt the men's dress. The narrow pants with their ornate silver buttons become a long skirt. The short jacket, white shirt and tie remain the same as does the fancy sombrero, and she traditionally wears silver earrings with her hair pulled back into braids or a ponytail. Working in ceramic, Luis Morales depicts a catrina as a mariachi.

The word catrina is widely used in Mexico to mean "elegant and polished." Lithographer Jose Guadalupe Posadas created the skeletal Catrina, who was later immortalized in the murals of Diego Rivera.

I have one at every sink!

I love these soap dishes. I use bar soap to minimize plastic, and these drain wonderfully, are easy to clean, look beautiful, a large enough for a big bar. I was particularly excited to find black and white dishes, because they are perfect in my home. Thank you for these beautiful, functional works of art!
