Carved by hand from native sese wood, this handsome mask is an original design by Awudu Saaed. The young woman wears a tall headdress and braids her long hair. Enhanced with aluminum and copper wire, the piece depicts a girl of Nigeria's Fula tribe. "Such masks are used to thank the gods of when a female child is born," the artisan says. "The people ask for long life, wisdom, blessings and protection for the child."

Not sure how I stumbled upon this mask in the first place but from the moment I saw it, something about it haunted me. Its beautiful. I could NOT stop thinking about it and finally caved, and Im so glad I did. The colors, the beadwork, and the craftsmanship are all incredible. This is my favorite piece of art we own, by far. I cant wait to collect more of Awudu Saaeds work.
