Details

Crafted by hand, this delightful morral combines rich textures with browns, purple and navy blue. Artisan members of Peru's Center for Traditional Textiles of Cusco first knot the yarn before it is woven on a backstrap loom. The motifs derive from Inca art in an effort to keep the traditional patterns and techniques alive as well as their Andean identity. This texture is known as urpi, which means "dove" in the Quechua language.

The community raises and cares for its own alpacas. The fleece is washed, carded and spun by hand using a pushka, or drop spindle. The dyes come from plants, nuts and tree bark. The next step is one of the most important, as the artisan prepares the warp, or vertical threads for the backstrap loom. This determines the size of the textile, the color combinations, and the patterns that will be woven.

The intensity of color can vary depending on the hardness of the water, the altitude and the local dye sources, making each textile a unique piece of handcrafted art.

Beautiful, well made and it Makes Me HAPPY!”

Every time I carry this purse I have women -- and one man who was looking for a birthday gift for his wife -- who LOVED this purse and asked where I got it. I gave them your website! And when I told them its alpaca, they were delighted and one squeeled, Oh, I LOVE alpaca! WOW! I think its great, and one thing I really like about it is that it holds my wallet, phone, a few other items--and then the purse says, Clean me out! The size is what I was looking for and then I found this BEAUTIFUL option. Abit pricier than I wanted, but worth EVERY PENNY! THANKS!

Unique, artful, beautiful colors, and useful, as well!”

This handbag is absolutely beautiful! The colors are both gentle and calming (the blues and greens) and eyecatchingly bright -- (the beautiful berry/wine colored section down the center, which also incorporates lots of other colors.) This bag has a wonderful texture to it, as well. I love that it was loom-woven, and is also one-of-a-kind. Its sturdy, and a useful size, as well, and easily holds my (large) wallet, phone, and other necessities.
