Hopeful, Chief Carver Nana Frimpong designs an original mask so that it may grant him a wish, that peace may reign. He carves it by hand from sese wood and decorates it with a long protrusion over the nose. "It is meant to be a bridge that joins quarreling sides so they may meet halfway, solve their differences, and welcome peace," explains Frimpong. Titled Asomdwie Apem (Let Peace Reign), the mask's childlike smile is inspiring.

This is just the right size to fit neatly in so many places. I reflect on the meaning each day as I leave the door of my bedroom where it reminds me to look honestly at the past and remember its lessons in order to build a better future.
